COLLAGEN BIOSTIMULATOR

WHAT IS BIOSTIMULATOR?

Biostimulator is a collagen stimulator treatment. The treatment contains a substance called poly-L-lactic acid, which is a Biostimulator that is injected under the skin to gradually restore collagen production. As collagen production is stimulated, the skin starts to regain its structure and volume, therefore we see wrinkles and defects start to gradually correct.

Sculptra treatment is a minimally invasive and non-surgical treatment that helps stimulate collagen production in and around a specified area of the body.

HOW IS THE TREATMENT?

Normally it is required two to four treatment sessions, spaced about 4 to 6 weeks apart. The number of sessions needed will depend on the severity of the wrinkles or volume loss being treated.

WHAT CAN I EXPECT AFTER THE TREATMENT?

The injected area may be a little swollen, bruised and/or tender, which is completely normal. It is essential to firmly massage the area treated for 5 minutes, five times a day for five days, to prevent nodules from occurring.

WHAT ARE THE RISKS AND POSSIBLE SIDE EFFECTS?

Like any medical procedure, there are some risks and side effects associated with biostimulator injections. These may include:

  • Swelling and bruising: It is common to experience some swelling and bruising at the injection site. The majority should subside within a few days but can last up to 2 weeks.

  • Redness and tenderness: The treated area may appear red and tender, which should also improve within a few days.

  • Tenderness, discomfort or pain: A mild degree of tenderness and discomfort is expected post-treatment; however, if significant pain occurs, please contact your treating practitioner.

  • Nodules: Small lumps or nodules may form under the skin in rare cases.

  • Infection: As with any injection, there is a risk of disease. To minimise this risk, choosing a reputable practitioner and following proper aftercare instructions is essential.

  • Granuloma: an uncommon risk where the body’s immune system reacts to the bio-stimulators and causes the formation of lumps

  • Vascular occlusion: Although rare, the bio-stimulator injections may occlude the arterial supply to the skin, soft tissues or the eyes, leading to scarring or blindness (extremely rare).

  • Asymmetry: Some individuals may experience some asymmetry during recovery due to swelling and bruising or due to asymmetrical injections or responses to the product.

Biostimulator injections’ risks and side effects are generally mild and temporary. However, discussing any concerns with a qualified practitioner before treatment is essential.

This treatment requires no down time. 24 hours before treatment it is advisable to avoid aspirin, alcohol, and anti-inflammatory medication.  Side effects are uncommon but can include redness, small bumps, bruising and mild tenderness post treatment.
During the first 12 hours post treatment we recommend avoiding make up, 2 days post avoid alcohol and vigorous exercise. For 14 days after treatment extreme temperatures (hot or cold) should be avoided.

The effects of biostimulator treatment typically last up to 2 years. We recommend having yearly maintenance treatments after that period of time. Its important to note this is a gradual treatment, you should see the results 2-3 months after your treatment.
